Autumn Road Trip: Exploring the Hudson Valley and Beyond

Autumn in the Hudson Valley brings bright foliage together with rich history and excellent food. This three-day itinerary is for travelers who want scenic drives, cultural stops and good meals.

Scenic drives through Rhinebeck and Tivoli

Head to the picturesque towns of Rhinebeck and Tivoli, where tree-lined roads turn red, orange and gold in the fall. Both towns mix historic charm with a modern, polished feel.

  • Rhinebeck: Walk the historic district, browse local boutiques and try farm-to-table dining. The town is also home to the Beekman Arms, often described as America’s oldest continuously operating inn. (Financial Times)
  • Tivoli: A small village known for its artistic community, Tivoli has cozy cafes, art galleries and views of the Hudson River.

For more Hudson Valley towns to visit in the fall, see Architectural Digest’s guide.

Dining at the Culinary Institute of America

In Hyde Park, plan a meal at The Culinary Institute of America. The CIA runs several student-staffed restaurants with different cuisines (verify current restaurant lineup):

  • American Bounty Restaurant: Regional American dishes made with local ingredients.
  • The Bocuse Restaurant: Classic French cuisine with a modern twist.
  • Ristorante Caterina de’ Medici: Italian food in a Tuscan villa-style setting.
  • Apple Pie Bakery Café: A casual spot for sandwiches, soups and baked goods.

Reservations are recommended, especially in the fall.

History at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum

Finish the trip at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park. The first presidential library in the United States, it gives a full look at FDR’s life and legacy, with exhibits of personal artifacts, photographs and documents that shaped American history.

Suggested 3-day itinerary

Day 1: Poughkeepsie and Hyde Park

  • Start at the Walkway Over the Hudson, a pedestrian bridge with wide views of the river.
  • Have dinner at one of the CIA’s restaurants.

Day 2: Rhinebeck and Tivoli

  • Take the foliage routes north to Rhinebeck.
  • Browse local shops and art galleries, and have lunch at a farm-to-table restaurant.
  • Continue to Tivoli for afternoon coffee and a walk along the Hudson River.

Day 3: Hyde Park

  • Visit the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum.
  • Take an easy drive through the surrounding countryside to enjoy the autumn colors.

Peak foliage usually arrives in October, but timing varies from year to year.

In short

This itinerary balances natural scenery, history and food, which makes it a good autumn road trip through the Hudson Valley.
